Coming on the heels of allowing laneway housing a couple of years ago, the city of Toronto is now considering the possibility of allowing garden suites, which are essentially the same as the laneway suites except that they are not required to back onto a laneway.
This is great news, but still too little to alleviate the pressure on the city's housing stock. The city is almost single-handedly responsible for the lack of housing because of all the bureaucratic and unnecessary regulations that drastically slow down the construction of new units. We know that because when the bureaucrats put their minds to it, housing is built in a record time.
Nevertheless, they need to be acknowledged for taking a step in the right direction. If housing is something you're interested in, you can get involved:
Fill out the survey that the city has released and make your voice heard.
