In this recent piece, I mentioned how private corporations are running surveillance schemes that would make the Stasi look like child's play (see this chilling, yet enlightening movie on the topic).
A friend of mine lapsed architect and fellow digital skeptic, responded with the following anecdote:
"About employers treating their employees like shit... Over the years, I had been dancing with a local firm until I got my gig with the State. In a lunch with the owner, after I got a job with the government, he was bitching about his employees... And then revealed that he has security cams in the office and tracking software on their computers to keep tabs on them.
I thought to myself, fuck that. You think you'll get a self-respecting licensed, professional to work for you under those circumstances? Well [not] unless he paid top dollar, which he doesn't.
There is a reason why certain firms hit a ceiling. I don't see how he will ever retain talented people in those circumstances. Oh well, I didn't know him well enough to give him this free advice...but I thought you'd get a kick out of the anecdote.”
