In recent times, this blog has discussed the 4-day workweek, optionality and now overachievers working too hard.
The west suffers from a disease, which is the belief that the harder one works, the better their life will be. I used to suffer from it too, especially in my days as a grad student. There is tons of evidence out there that not having a life outside of work is bad for you, I think we all know that, but there isn't much talk about what drives that phenomenon.
The Harvard Business Review may have put their finger on the answer: culture. This piece is a must-read, but be warned, if you are an "insecure overachiever" who lives to work, this may make you uncomfortable, but I hope it will help spark important conversations about how we work and finding a more balanced lifestyle.
