I've never been a fan of food delivery. I'd much rather eat in or if I can't, like the last 6 months, go for a walk and get take out. There is something about the ability to see the food I'm buying before I order that is reassuring. With delivery there is always the chance that you'll get a shitty meal, or worse that your delivery drivers spits in your food.
The crazy development of the food delivery industry has therefore completely eluded me, as I don't think I've ever placed a food order from an app. But what hasn't is that the UberEats of the world, in spite of democratizing a service have been ruining the restaurant industry.
In the name of convenience, when we use these apps, we rob restauranteurs of their profit, as the margins, already razor thin in the hospitality industry are being eaten by the delivery apps fees, which are often higher than whatever meager profit restaurants have and restaurants are being pressured to accept these ungodly high rates without the ability to negotiate.
So if you want your local restaurant to stay alive in these tough times, place an order directly with them and make sure to tip their delivery guy generously, or better yet, pick up your order in person and leave the delivery money as a kingly tip.
I don't think convenience above all is worth the price of cannibalizing the local restaurants. They are essential to making cities interesting and vibrant.
