When asked by young comedians what he did to succeed, Seinfeld would give the following piece of advice:
Put a calendar up on the wall and write new material every day.
Every day, after you're done writing, put a big fat X across that day.
After a while, the successive Xs will form a long chain up on the wall.
Your job is to not break the chain.
When I was trying to form a daily habit of writing, I used similar tricks and it works very well to help hold oneself accountable. The moral of the story it's that not of what we produce will be great from the beginning, but that we get better with consistent, dedicated practice.
It doesn't matter if your work isn't great when you start something new, just don't break the chain.
