In a time when being an "influencer", whatever that means, to many has become a life goal in and of itself, it seems like a certain segment of the population wants the benefits of hard work and its attendant success, without having to do the actual work.
We see people writing their memoirs before they hit 30, artists holding retrospective exhibits of their work less than 10 years into their careers, and "entrepreneurs" being described as the world's youngest billionaires, when all they did was to lend their already-famous name to a beauty line (and one can guess that they have an army of business people and lawyers telling them what to do every second of the day).
I think what's missing from this picture is the years of hard work and dedicated practice that lead to a fulfilling, meaningful life. Once one has years or even decades of practice into any field, then it makes sense to show that work to the world and share what has been created and evolved over years of working on your ideas.
Social media isn't and will never be a shortcut to greatness because the competition will always be fierce and if you only rely on easy-to-use, widely accessible tools that don't require any skills (e.g. photo filters on instagram), it will always be a rat-race just to keep up.
It is wiser to Zig when everybody else Zags and these days, that means going on a social media diet and producing something of value, only to come out of hiding once that work is fully matured, instead of showcasing uninspired work that mimics what everybody else is doing.
