I'll be the first to admit that I can write stuff that's serious and intense at times. Therefore, on Fridays I'll be featuring something more lighthearted, fun, or creative, so we can all end the week on a high note. Have a great weekend!
When I think about architecture on film, my mind invariably goes to the Architectures series produced by the Franco-German network Arte starting in the 1990s. Each of the 67 episodes is a masterpiece in minimal storytelling that lets the architecture speak to the camera. There is no soundtrack and the narration is kept to a minimum. It's as close to being inside a building as you'll get with video.
Back when I was an architecture student, these movies were a reference and often screened in class when professors were unable to organize in-person visits. Once I had the chance to see a few of these masterpieces in person, like the beloved Therme Vals, my real-life experience of that place wasn't much different from the expectation that the movie had set up for me.
These may require a little digging to have access to, especially in English (though an Anglo version does exist), they're well worth the effort (apparently, they can be found on Youtube).
