2 years ago, I set out to write 3000 words a month, as part of a new marketing effort to develop rvltr. The idea was to put more of my own thoughts out there in order to develop relationships with clients that would be a good fit for the company.
It took a while to reach that goal (I narrowly missed it last year, due to an inconsistent writing schedule), but this year, it has been shattered to pieces. As of this writing, I have written over 39,000 words, 3000 more than originally anticipated, 3 months ahead of schedule. While I think this is nothing to sneeze at, the main lesson for you and me is that consistency has huge payoffs. and if you stick to something long enough, you will get good at it and other people will recognize that ability in you as well.
Indeed, it is just recently that I've been seeing more of the opportunities I was seeking as a result of consistently writing, from prospects reaching out directly to speaking opportunities and being invited to do podcasts with other people.
I committed to posting a piece every day, which in turn required advance planning and developing both the regular habit of writing as well as the procedures to make sure I wouldn't falter. After the habits set in, it became much easier to stick to the plan and keep doing it. I did fuck up a few times by missing a posting day here and there, but I would bet that most of you would not have noticed it either.
This daily blogging idea was inspired by Seth Godin and Brandon Donnelly, who both have large followings and deliver great content every day. I highly recommend them for inspiration and great insights respectively.
