Today, I am going to share something a bit more personal than usual and tell you about me.
My name is Arnaud Marthouret, I am the founder and principal photographer behind revelateur studio. An architect by trade, photographer by choice, I was born in Grenoble, France, where I lived until my early twenties. Growing up surrounded by grandiose mountains which I hiked, climbed and skied all over my entire life, I developed an idiosyncratic love for natural landscapes and by extension, the natural order. I am most touched by beauty that is derived from ordering principles and structures found in nature. Serendipity is something I seek in my life.
As an inherently creative person, it is not until later in life that I found my calling as an architect and a few years after that, as an architectural photographer. In everything I did ever since I can remember, I brought a creative side that often got me categorized as a bit quirky, but that was always deeply satisfying to my insatiable curiosity and thirst for the new and unusual. These are character traits that I still cherish and nurture to this day, as they allow me to see things from a different perspective.
I have a lifelong love affair for two-wheeled modes of transportation, particularly motorcycles, which I justify as props for my photoshoots. The overwhelming feeling of freedom that one experiences riding a bike provides an ideal form of focused escape from this over-connected life. I am also partial to '79 to '99 hip-hop, german sports cars, jazz, classic menswear, shoes, french cuisine and wandering aimlessly while building stream-of-consciousness narratives in my head.
Starting revelateur in 2014 brought these multiple personalities together and allowed me to reconcile slightly schizophrenic and opposite lifestyles: the hip cosmopolitan urbanite vs. the outdoorsy nature lover. This shows in my work as I am equally comfortable managing large, urban and complex photoshoots as I am with small cottage-country cabins tucked in the woods. I am on a quest to continuously better myself in what I do and find satisfaction in going the extra mile to do justice to a building that inspires me and I think deserves the best possible photography.
